2011 – Clem Esmail
Clem Esmail was drawn to the hotel industry after a strong advertising career with Young & Rubicam, as Account Director for the Sheraton Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Tourist Association, British Airways, Association of South East Nations, Lufthansa, and many more. In 1985, Clem joined Sheraton Hawaii. Clem has left his international mark with his work on the Sheraton Hotels, Hawaii/Japan Division, Honolulu; the Sheraton Princeville; and the Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay, which was Sheraton’s first hotel in Tokyo.
In 1992, Clem brought his international experience to San Francisco to the Sheraton Palace Hotel, reopening the Palace Hotel after a major restoration. The foundation he strengthened at the Palace is an indication of the foundation he has steadily built for the San Francisco hotel industry’s reputation. As Past President of the Hotel Council of San Francisco, Clem led the Hotel Council in a three-fold strategic plan to strengthen the industry’s position in the City and County of San Francisco through marketing, alliances, and political relationships.
Throughout his career, Clem has embraced all aspects of the hotel industry: sales, engineering, housekeeping, kitchen, labor relations, procurement, food supplies, and more. It is that established dedication coupled with his constant thoughtful consideration, generosity, and kindness that has earned him this prestigious award.
